Reporting & Analytics at UW-Madison

Reporting & Analytics

How do we support UW-Madison in accessing information?  By providing the applications, tools, and best practices that enable information driven decision making.

The Chief Data Officer through the CIO’s office understands and supports the strategic importance of using data to drive decision-making at UW-Madison.  Therefore, we are collaborating with co-sponsors Academic Planning and Institutional Research to provide a new and improved infrastructure that will meet the growing reporting and analytics needs of campus.

We believe providing the right tool for the right type of analysis is key to understanding information.  Real-time operational reports such as class lists should be delivered within the student information system.  So, we are working with the Office of the Registrar to develop basic reporting functionality within that system.   Data Visualizations allow users to interact with data in order to find answers.  Thus, we have begun providing information through Tableau in a highly interactive manner.  Anyone with a UW NetID can view visualizations at

Additionally, in November of 2015 the UW System purchased Oracle Business Intelligence Suite.  This best of breed application will replace our outdated Interactive Reporting Tool.  Learn more about this project here.

Best Practices & Education

We have gathered a group of analysts from across campus to form the Business Intelligence Community of Experts.  This group will focus on creating templates for reporting as well as general training on how to use the new tools available to UW-Madison.
