Perhaps the most visible part of a data steward’s role to many staff at UW–Madison is protecting access to institutional data. To grant appropriate access, they abide by laws, regulations, and institutional policy, while ensuring availability for the future.
While authorizing access is often the most visible part of their work, data stewards play a much broader role in helping the university manage and use institutional data effectively. Data stewards help define and implement data management practices within their data domain. ensuring institutional data remains accurate, accessible, and appropriately protected.
Contact the appropriate data steward when you are ready to:
- Explore opportunities to use institutional data.
- Review changing a data collection, storage, or process.
- Discuss building a new system that uses institutional data.
- Seek guidance on data policies, procedures, and compliance.
- Report data quality concerns, such as data that appears inaccurate, outdated, or duplicative.
By partnering with colleagues to understand their needs and balancing protection with availability, data stewards empower our campus to make data-informed decisions.
If you have questions about which data steward to connect with, contact DAPIR for guidance.
