Getting started in Denodo

Denodo, like most databases, is oriented toward a technical user who is comfortable writing SQL. Before requesting access to new data in Denodo, a good first step may be to review existing content in case your problem is already solved:

  • Data Digest and accompanying Excel documents.
  • RADAR: Browse an existing solution that may meet your needs.
  • Data Glossary: Search by keyword to see products linked to available solutions.

To use Denodo, users must have the Denodo user role, known as ‘User’ in Denodo, and access to at least one domain of data. To request the Denodo user role or domain data roles, visit Badger Data Access or review the KB about requesting access to Denodo.

Once approved, users can access Denodo (UW-Madison network or VPN required) using the web catalog, tools, and direct database connections. The views available to users within Denodo are limited based on their approved domain and classification permissions.

What is available in Denodo?

At launch, three data sources are available in Denodo:

  • InfoAccess.
  • Badger Data Warehouse (Snowflake).
  • Enterprise Analytics Platform (EAP). The systemwide warehouse for Workday and legacy PeopleSoft ERPs.

Badger Data Connect continues to add new data sources to Denodo, expanding users’ options for connecting their data. As new data sources are added, they are searchable within Denodo’s internal catalog.

KnowledgeBase and training resources

Commonly used KnowledgeBase articles

Denodo uses industry-standard SQL syntax, but like all databases, you may encounter specific functions that vary between systems, like moving between Oracle/Snowflake/SQL Server/Postgres. These are usually low-impact and have a parallel function, but to simplify these function conversions, Denodo has provided some helpful quick-reference guides.

Denodo community website training materials

As an enterprise customer of Denodo, UW-Madison has access to a great deal of self-paced training materials on the Denodo community website.

To access this free content, UW-Madison staff must register for an account using their netid@wisc.edu email address. Registering using any subdomains (e.g., netid@ls.wisc.edu) will not grant free content access.

How does Denodo work?

Denodo is a virtualization tool that enables you to access data from multiple sources as if they were all in one place. It connects to various data sources such as databases, files, or APIs and integrates them in a way that appears and functions like a single system. As the tool for the Badger Data Connect service, it allows users to query data from a multitude of systems in a single place— you only need one login and one set of security rules to use it.

For more information about Denodo, visit their website.

The Denodo Platform sits on top of an enterprise data landscape, enabling access to multiple, diverse data sources while making them appear as one “logical” data source to users. The Denodo Platform adheres to a logical data management architecture that is designed to optimize both traditional data sources (databases, data lakehouses, enterprise data warehouses, data lakes, etc.) and other data sources (applications, files, web services, and the cloud) to meet a wide variety of use cases.
