Thank you to Lisa Johnston, Director of Data Governance, and Lonnie Morgan, UW-Madison ATP Data & Reporting Strategy Lead, for joining the Badger Data Network in September. Lisa highlighted what we can expect to see over the next year for UW–Madison’s data governance program. Lonnie provided Workday data and reporting updates.
Current and future priorities for the data governance program
To improve our data quality and documentation, exploration of Collibra as a data catalog and glossary tool has started. All data users need access to documentation to understand the integrity, accuracy, and quality of UW–Madison’s data.
A multi-year effort is underway to align our current data classification policy with the Universities of Wisconsin’s Administrative Policy 1031. UW–Madison currently classifies data as public, internal, sensitive, or restricted data compared to the classifications of low, moderate, and high risk used by the Universities of Wisconsin.
Additional priority areas under consideration by the Data Governance Council include:
- Establish new processes that operationalize data stewardship.
- Determine the need for and define new domains.
- Explore issues related to protecting data privacy.
- Align data governance with how AI-enabled tools and functions are enabled with access to institutional data.
- Review Institutional Data Policy (UW-523).
- Expand the number of learners who have taken Data@UW responsible use training.

Workday— enhanced stabilization phase
The hypercare stage of Workday implementation is now complete, but stabilization efforts continue.
During the activities leading up to go-live, there were items that, although important, were not deemed critical for the initial launch. Those enhancements and modifications are now being reviewed along with new requests. A process for collecting, deciding, executing, and releasing requests for business process changes, new and updated reports, new reference values, and new integrations is established.
Multiple data needs are recognized, including:
- Updating or creating new Workday Reports.
- Stabilizing EAP data flows.
- Updating or creating new EAP datasets in Redshift.
- Updating or establishing new API endpoints.
- Delivering EAP datasets to charter data warehouses.
- More improved documentation about Workday datasets in Workday and EAP.
