What is Public Data?

UW-Madison classifies data into one of four risk-based categories: Public, Internal, Sensitive, and Restricted. Data is classified as Public when the unauthorized disclosure, alteration, loss or destruction of that data would result in little or no risk to the University and its affiliates.

Can I share Public Data with others?

Public Data may be shared. It can be viewed and read by anyone.

What are my responsibilities for protecting Public Data?

There are no specific requirements for the handling and protection of Public Data, though Public Data may still be subject to applicable records retention/destruction requirements.
