August 2024. A vision for a modern data platform— making it easier to get and use data

At the Badger Data Network’s August session, Brad Sanders, DAPIR’s Director of Enterprise Data Management, provided a brief overview of the modernization efforts of UW–Madison’s data platform.

Three identified goals:

#1 Simplified data access, including:

  • One place for most users to find and query data
  • One account, one set of credentials
  • One layer of security to manage

#2 Many systems and one view of data

  • Quickly make data objects that are built out of multiple data systems
  • Clear lineage of how views are made
  • Clear metadata for views, including how they are used and secured

#3 Immediately connect impacted data sources and have room to grow as we progress
