Institutional data. What it is and what it is not.

Institutional data is any information, regardless of medium, used by or for the university to conduct university business. Owned and governed by UW–Madison, institutional data is a critical shared resource. Examples of it include:

  • Student records.
  • Employee records.
  • Financial information.
  • Facilities information.

It is important to note that institutional data is governed separately from research data generated by university research.

As the caretaker of institutional data, the university has an obligation to protect the data integrity and quality, privacy of data subjects, and security of institutional data while also maximizing its effective and efficient use.

Take action: It only takes 30 minutes for you to complete Data@UW – Data Governance and Responsible Use, an interactive online learning opportunity hosted in Workday that introduces UW–Madison employees to institutional data and their individual responsibilities.
