Updated Course Catalog Tableau visualization now available

The Course Catalog Tableau workbook recently underwent an upgrade, adding several pieces of course-related information requested by staff in academic planning and advising-focused positions.

The main motivation for the update is the implementation of the UW System Core GenEd requirements. This workbook makes it easy to find courses that meet Core GenEd and other UW-Madison degree requirements. The other addition fills a longstanding gap in information about transfer equivalency courses. Staff can now see the course designations assigned to transfer equivalency courses, such as breadth, communication, quantitative reasoning, ethnic studies, and Core GenEd.

Sara Stephenson, Academic Planner in the College of Letters and Science, is a frequent user of the Course Catalog Tableau workbook. She uses it to:

  • Quickly produce and sort a list of courses for departments based on their requested criteria. For example, print a list of all course descriptions for courses offered by the Department of Chemistry.
  • See courses that have multiple attributes. For example, find a course that is a social science breadth and a natural science and wellness lab in Core GenEd.
  • Identify all courses in a department/subject/school/college that have not been taught in a specified period of time.
  • Find all courses in a school/college, department, or subject that meet the new UW System Core GenEd categories.
  • Review course learning outcomes. For example, identify courses that need learning outcomes entered.

The Course Catalog Tableau workbook displays all currently active courses approved by the University Curriculum Committee.
