January 2025. NSF HERD research expenditure data visualization and a preview of an upcoming enhanced version of RADAR

RADAR enhancement

The enhanced version of RADAR, shared at January’s meeting, leverages Tableau’s tree map feature. We will release it in March 2025. More information to come!

A graduate student with a background in user experience reviewed over 70 peer websites and discovered that most do not have a repository. A few institutions were leveraging Tableau’s tree map function, which was determined to be the best maintenance path forward.

DAPIR intends to continuously improve RADAR and welcomes your thoughts about desired enhancements. Please email us at dapir@provost.wisc.edu to share your ideas.

New data visualization

DAPIR created a data visualization that displays NSF (National Science Foundation’s) HERD research expenditure data for UW‑Madison and other institutions from FY 2003 to FY 2023. The visualization is classified as internal, and all UW–Madison employees can view it.

The NSF HERD Research Expenditures visualization enables us to compare UW-Madison to our peers easily and provides multiple ways to examine peer groups. This type of comparison was time-consuming before the visualization. Peer groups in the visualization include:

  • the Association of American Universities (AAU)
  • the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA)
  • all institutions with a Carnegie Classification of “Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activity”
