Badger Data Access is a central application that lets users see their assigned data access roles, request additional access, and review the history of changes to their account. The Badger Data Access tool provides built-in workflows for easy approvals by supervisors and data stewards.
Service tool: Badger Data Access (custom application)
Who does this service support: Staff who need approval to access warehoused and connected institutional data by domain and classification.
Understanding data domains and classification roles
All institutional data in the Badger Data Platform is assigned to a data domain and is classified based on risk.
- Domains and subdomains organize data into categories of similar topics.
- Data trustees are university officials with authority over institutional data or the university’s use of it.
- Data stewards help define, implement, and enforce data management policies and procedures within their specific data domain.
After the data are grouped into domains, they are classified by the level of risk associated with their use.
The process for granting access to data
UW—Madison’s Institutional Data Access and Authorization Standard outlines the authorization of access, how it is determined if authorization is granted, and other areas related to data access.
Before requesting new access, confirm that the data is not already available to you and what new domain and classifications are needed to accomplish your necessary business task.
- You submit a request for the domain of data necessary for your work, the level of access you need in that domain, and provide a justification for your request.
- Your supervisor reviews the request to ensure it aligns with your work’s needs.
- If your division has a divisional approver, they also review the request.
- The data steward for the domain you’ve requested provides the final approval for the access.

How to determine if the data is already available
Before you request access to additional data, ensure it is not already available to you in a different form or place. Review existing content, including:
- Data Digest and accompanying Excel documents
- RADAR: Browse an existing solution that may meet your needs.
- Data Glossary: Search by keyword to see products linked to available solutions.
- Denodo views, including their classifications and brief descriptions.
If you need data that is not available
If you need to access datasets not currently available in the Badger Data platform, consult with the domain’s data steward to discuss options. There may be ways to help you using the Connect, Warehouse, and Processing services, or leveraging other existing enterprise tools.
